Who would you choose as England Football Captain?

by Cathedral Imp

So, it would appear that Fabio Capello has chosen his man. Step forward Rio Ferdinand. Seriously I feel let down by this choice. Here we have a man who is already idolised by his young fans, but who was banned from football for nearly a year for missing a drugs test. Capello has his ideas for what he wants from his captain. Good behaviour off the pitch is one of the conditions for becoming the chosen one. How can being banned from competition for nearly a year be seen as towing the line?

When you look at the other contenders for the captaincy though it will have certainly been a tough choice. Let's have a look at some of them. Steven Gerrard, Liverpool captain, and one of Liverpool's two best players, but never really seems able to take his form onto the international stage. Perhaps Capello doesn't see Gerrard as an automatic choice for the England first eleven, hence justifying his choice not to choose him as captain. Then we have John Terry, who in my eyes looks a strong leader but whenever there is a controversial decision on the pitch during a Chelsea game we can always see him hassling the referee. It would appear the lack of respect towards the ref is not favoured by Capello.

No other player stands out as an obvious choice for captain. What we do know is that when we have eleven Englishmen out on the pitch we need eleven leaders, not just the one. However, how can we teach our children that cheats don't prosper when we have one who is the current England captain!
